Kim Doherty Textile Artist
Kim Doherty produces unique, hand-made textiles, to wear, for soft furnishings, and art pieces for your interior spaces.
Living and working from her studio on Victoria’s beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, is a wonderful place to create, and provides Kim with endless inspiration; particularly the constantly changing colours, moods, and shapes. The sea also throws up flotsam and jetsam treasures, as does the decaying environment. These weather-beaten, gnarled and eroded shapes often find relationships in her work.
Kim is a multi-award-winning hand weaver. Her handwoven scarves and shawls are constructed of extremely fine, luxury yarns; creating her signature very lightweight fabrics with a beautiful feel and drape.
Since Kim Doherty Textile Artist graduated from RMIT in 1994 having completed studies in Studio Textiles, she has extensively exhibited her work, and taken numerous commissions.
It’s the tactile nature of textiles that has so much appeal for Kim. Creating things which cry out to be touched is very satisfying. From the fine silks and wools employed to produce her handwoven scarves, to the array of other materials, such as wire and fishing line, which are knitted, woven or coiled to create art pieces and jewellery.
Being part of, and seeing the big picture, but honing in on the micro, presents a whole new world of incredible texture and colour, which when photographed, presents a perfect backdrop for her multimedia pieces.
Kim tries to put a contemporary spin on what are essentially ancient crafts.
As Kim’s practice has evolved, so has the work she makes, and she produces a very broad range of work, including cushions, either made from her hand screen printed fabrics or embroidered with her designs; handwoven scarves and fabrics; bags; jewellery; Art Pieces; and a range of clothing and accessories embroidered with distinctive Celtic flavour.
Along with practicality, Kim’s philosophy encompasses beauty and form, and accessibility for all. She has a deep personal connection with every one of her pieces, and sees her work as defining your uniqueness, as well as her own.
It’s a constant evolution as new ideas and inspirations develop into finished pieces. The possibilities are endless…………………
