“Ballet Under the Sea”

This small-scale sculpture (approx. 30cm or 12″ wide & Approx. 13cm or 5″ high) was born out of my love for all things rusty & the water that makes them that way.

It’s a delicate relationship between the metal & it’s transformation, & how it gets to be that way.  The use of monofilament is purposeful, as it’s usually used to catch fish under the water.  When objects are under the water, particularly when they are flexible, they appear to move and sway with the energy of the ocean…. dancing….   This is what I was hoping to capture.

I love the way that monofilament expands and stretches as it is hand-knitted.  It doesn’t appear to grow as you knit away, but when stretched, it’s really malleable.

There is a lot of man-made material at the bottom of the sea, mostly by accident.  There is a dance around in those waters with other materials, created through tides and currents.  Even though it’s a terrible intrusion environmentally, there is a lovely ballet there .

I love to re-purpose lots of found and discarded materials, and mix them with textile techniques like knitting to create interesting artworks.
